UPCOMING MESSAGES:C.H. Spurgeon once said, “Whether we like it or not, asking is the rule of the kingdom.” When we read the scriptures we see that while on earth Jesus prayed often. Luke 11:1 tells us that his prayer life motivated the disciples to approach Jesus and ask Him to teach them how to pray. That request is a reminder that prayer is not something we know how to do naturally, but a spiritual activity to be learned. This month we take the role of the student in the school of prayer. We learn from Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount about how to pray, and what prayer is. In prayer we learn a lot about God. One of the simplest and most profound things we learn is that He is our Father. God invites his children to pray so that we will live, believing that a Father gives good gifts to his children. Something amazing happens to us when we talk with God. We discover his heart for our families and the people we love. It changes us too! Dietrich Bonhoeffer said it well: “Intercessory prayer is the purifying bath into which the individual and the fellowship must enter every day.” I Thess. 5:17 reminds us to pray without ceasing. So…If God’s expecting to talk with us every day, then prayer is something on which we should focus!
