Why Do We Hunger for Beauty?
magine a hole in your heart. Something goes there...but
what is it? We try anything in our lives to fill it--food, drink, money,
power--but it never stays filled. We seek something, but don't know
what it is. Why do we hunger for beauty?
Imagine a father. Imagine a father so powerful that
he created the entire universe, who had all power and glory, but was willing
to die in your place to save your life. A father whose powerful love makes any
earthly love you have ever experienced seem like a poor reflection. A father who
knows how many hairs are on your head, and knows your every joy and pain.
A father who knows every mistake you have ever made...but would die to
save you anyway. Who wouldn't want to have a part of that kind of love?
Now imagine that there was a way to change your life.
Something that would not only give you hope for a future that we can
only imagine, but a way to change you today, to bring you a new joy
right now. Our souls cry out for something greater than ourselves. Why do we hunger for beauty?
God knows you, and every great thing or moment of
weakness you have ever had. But great deeds cannot build a stairway
to God, nor can our failures lock us away from Him. The yearning of our
hearts for something we cannot name is built into our souls. What
we long for is a connection with our God; a need to belong to his
family. And God himself has already paid the price so that you can be part
of that family! If you are seeking Him, there is an easy path that
can change your life! One author proposed that there are four simple
"Spiritual Laws" that can express the beauty of God's love for us:
God has a personal love for you, and knows
everything about you. God wants your life to grow and blossom,
and be all that it can be!
"God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal
life." (John 3:16)
[Christ speaking] "I came that they might have life, and might
have it abundantly." [that is, "full and meaningful"] (John 10:10)
Our own bad choices in life, our sin, separates us
from God the Father. Try as we might, we cannot make ourselves perfect
enough to reach up to a perfect God. We stubbornly cling to things
that seem wise to ourselves, ignoring His plans for us. We try to invent
our own paths to God, by our own efforts, ignoring His sacrifice.
Though His love is eternal, on our own we cannot fully connect with it.
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
"The wages of sin is death." [spiritual separation from God] (Romans 6:23)
A popular song once said "God is watching
us...from a distance." Nothing could be more wrong! An all-powerful
God once gave up part of himself, and sent that spirit to live in
the flesh among us. Can you imagine that? God knows your pains,
your joys, your fears because He walked in the flesh of a man.
Our God knows all about us, firsthand.
In ages past, people made sacrifices to God in
an effort to pay for their sins. They gave up things that were
precious to them, as payment for the times they failed. But a
greater sacrifice has already been made; a perfect sacrifice to make you
clean before God!
Jesus personally knew your every sins and mine
when he walked to the cross...and went anyway. And that perfect
sacrifice pays not only for a moment of man's sins, but for all time!
Christ alone bridges the gap between ourselves and a perfect God.
Thanks to Him, we can once again be connected to the Father that
loves us! Through Him, we are adopted out of ourselves, and into
the family of God. And in His resurrection, we are guaranteed not
only a changed life today, but an eternity "at home" tomorrow.
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the
life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.'" (John 14:6)
"God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we
were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
"Christ died for our sins...He was buried...He was raised on
the third day, according to the Scriptures...He appeared to Peter,
then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred..."
(1 Corinthians 15:3-6)

The Homecoming |
The Bible says that Christ often spoke to his followers
about the need to become "a child of God." But do you know that to those
original followers, those Hebrew words would have been heard as "adopted
child of God"?
In Christ's time, when a person was adopted, it was more
than just being legally made part of another family. In the custom of
that time, the adopted person had to agree. They had to accept
being made part of the family. Today, God's family is still the same way.
The Bible says that God wants everyone to come into His family. But
actually accepting that invitation is up to you.
We all face this question. For you, in your walk,
it may take years of consideration and study to reach the point where
you are ready. Or, as some are, are you ready right now?
Welcome Home!
ow do we
respond to God's offer and come into His
family? The Bible records that we must simply accept Christ
into our hearts. Your faith in God, your faith that Jesus'
sacrifice makes you clean, and a prayer are all you need to come
to Him and to begin to change your entire life from within.
We come to God "as is", and from there on He works to help
us grow into who He expects us to be. Here's what
you should remember about the love God has for you...
- You Are Invited to Become Part of the Family
"As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to
become children of God, even to those who believe in His name"
(John 1:12)
- We Cannot "Earn" Our Way to God's Love
"By grace you have been saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works,
that no one should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9)
- Through Christ Alone, We are "Born Again"
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus,
a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus
at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who
has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous
signs you are doing if God were not with him." In reply
Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see
the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked.
"Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's
womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth,
no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of
water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but
the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be
surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'
- We Receive Christ by His Invitation
[Christ speaking] "Behold, I stand at the door and knock;
if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him."
(Revelation 3:20)
Receiving Christ involves turning towards God
and away from a self-centered life (repentance) and trusting Christ
to direct us, forgive our sins, and to remake us in His image.
Will we put our own weak selves on the throne of our lives, or will
we put God on the throne where He belongs? Are you ready today to
let Christ be your bridge to His Father, and to accept His love for
you, and your place in His family? The invitation has always been
there; it is your response that changes your life.
You Can Receive Christ Right Now by
Faith Through Prayer
any
people think that prayers (quietly talking to God)
need to be flowery and "perfect" but God only cares that your prayers
be from the heart, that they are honest and true. You can use your
own words if you want, but here's the general idea of a "Prayer of
Adoption."
"Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross
for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior
and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life.
Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person
You want me to be."
hat's it.
Humans love to build huge monuments,
or invent complicated ideas, but that is all that God requires of you...to
accept Christ's love and sacrifice for you, to ask Him in, and to
look to the future. We stumble, and we fall, and we can come to
Him again and again, asking for forgiveness when we again confess
our sins. No longer trapped by our past, every day is a new beginning
for those in Christ. God loves you and wants you to aim for the high
mark, and for you to go out and help others!
Whether you have accepted Christ here or not, we
hope and pray you will join us for service, and join with us as we
reach out to the community. And if you are still seeking Him, come
see Him work through our lives, as we show love in response to His
love! Join us this Sunday! You are needed and loved at Mt.
Washington Baptist Church!
